Rules & policy

What's allowed

Multiboxing is allowed in World of Warcraft. Input broadcasting and automation are not. Blizzard's own words, and how WoWBoxer stays on the allowed side.

Short answer: multiboxing is allowed. Blizzard bans input broadcasting and automated play. WoWBoxer is built around the one rule that keeps you on the allowed side: one key press = one action, on one character, in one window.

  • Allowed Playing several of your own accounts at once, by hand, with normal in-game macros and free add-ons.
  • Not allowed Anything that copies one key press or action to several clients, in software or hardware. Anything that plays for you.

Blizzard's position

Blizzard's support article is the place to start.

Multiboxing, or playing multiple World of Warcraft accounts at once, is not a violation of our End User License Agreement.

The 2020 policy update defines what is banned:

We've examined the use of third-party input broadcasting software, which allows a single keystroke or action to be automatically mirrored to multiple game clients, and we've seen an increasingly negative impact to the game as this software is used to support botting and automated gameplay.

In May 2021, Blizzard extended the ban to hardware:

We will now additionally prohibit the use of all software and hardware mechanisms to mirror commands to multiple World of Warcraft accounts at the same time, or to automate or streamline multi-boxing in any way.

In plain words: you may play several accounts at once. Every action has to come from your own key press. Mirroring one command to several accounts, and automation, are banned.

Each character needs its own game account, and each game account needs its own subscription or game time.

Manual play: one press, one action, one window

Players on the official forums read the policy as "one key press = one action in one client". Forum thread

That is exactly how WoWBoxer multiboxing works. Each character runs in its own window. You point at a window with the mouse, which makes it the active one (Windows' own hover setting), and press one key. That key does one thing, on that one character. Inside each client you use normal keybinds, /follow, /assist and macros.

Free, open add-ons

Blizzard's add-on policy is from 2009 and still pinned on the forums.

All add-ons must be distributed free of charge.

The programming code of an add-on must in no way be hidden or obfuscated, and must be freely accessible to and viewable by the general public.

Add-ons that write macros, out of combat

An add-on can create and edit macros, but the game blocks this during combat. Casting, targeting and movement always need your own key press.

#nocombat - This cannot be called while in combat.

Not allowed

These can lead to warnings, suspensions or closed accounts. WoWBoxer never does any of them.

Input broadcasting, in software or hardware

We've examined the use of third-party input broadcasting software, which allows a single keystroke or action to be automatically mirrored to multiple game clients, and we've seen an increasingly negative impact to the game as this software is used to support botting and automated gameplay.

Exact quote Blizzard — Policy Update for Input Broadcasting Software (3 Nov 2020) · checked 2026-10-27

Our take: In practice this covers any input broadcasting: software that copies keys, keyboards or mice whose macros send to several windows, and hardware that mirrors input to several PCs.

Automated play

These actions can include warnings, account suspensions and, if necessary, permanent closure of the player's World of Warcraft account(s), as activities which effectively replicate automated gameplay are contrary to the terms and conditions of the Blizzard End-User License Agreement (EULA).

Ads and donation requests inside add-ons

Add-ons may not be used to advertise any goods or services.

Exact quote Blizzard — UI Add-On Development Policy · checked 2026-10-27

Add-ons may not include requests for donations. We recognize the immense amount of effort and resources that go into developing an add-on; however, such requests should be limited to the add-on website or distribution site and should not appear in the game.

Why WoWBoxer is safe

Every part of WoWBoxer is built so that each action in the game comes from your own key press, in one window.

Hover to activate (a Windows setting)

This is how WoWBoxer players switch windows. "Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse" is part of Windows. The window under the mouse becomes the active one, and your next key press goes to that window only. It sends nothing to the game. The window app has a switch for it, with a short delay (about 30 ms) so windows don't activate while the mouse just passes over them.

What each tool does

  • The window app only manages windows. WoWBoxer Window Layouts moves and sizes your WoW windows and, if you turn them on, sets Windows' hover setting and one UI Scale value (with a backup). It never sends keys or clicks to the game, never reads game memory, never logs in for you and sends no telemetry.
  • The add-on writes macros and never plays. It writes its own WBX macros and puts them on your bars, only after your click and only out of combat. It never casts, targets, follows or moves for you.
  • The Squad Companion is text in your browser. It shows talents and macros for you to copy. It never connects to the game.
  • Everything is open. All code is MIT-licensed on GitHub and free. No ads or donation requests in the game.

WoWBoxer tools do

  • Explain the game's own features: windowed mode, party, /follow, /assist, keybinds.
  • Write macro text for you to copy, within 255 characters.
  • Start Battle.net (or WoW login screens) and place your windows where you told them to go.
  • Write one UI Scale value so the whole action bar fits, only when you ask, with a backup.
  • In the add-on: write WBX macros and put them on your bars, only after your click and only out of combat.
  • Publish all code under the MIT License, free of charge.

WoWBoxer tools never

  • Send keys, clicks or mouse moves to any game client.
  • Copy one action to several clients, or run actions on timers.
  • Switch windows for you. No round-robin, no swap hotkeys: you point at the next window yourself.
  • Log in for you, or ask for your Battle.net password.
  • Read game memory or change game files beyond the one UI Scale value you ask for.
  • Run code from an imported string.
  • Show ads or donation requests in the game.
Tool What it does What it never does
Guide & videos Setup with the game's and Windows' own features Recommend broadcasting tools
Squad Companion Talent plans and macro kits as text, in your browser Connect to the game, upload your squads
WoWBoxer Window Layouts Starts Battle.net, moves and sizes windows, sets the hover setting and UI Scale when you turn them on Send input of any kind, read game memory, log in
WoWBoxer add-on Writes its own WBX macros and places them, after your click, out of combat Cast, target, follow or move for you

Rules written for Forever

Our take: We found no multiboxing rule written for World of Warcraft®: Forever and no Blizzard statement about it (searched 27 Oct 2026). Forever is included in the World of Warcraft subscription, so we assume the general policy and EULA apply in full.

Unconfirmed

During the Forever beta, players reported that two game accounts on the same Battle.net login could not be online at the same time. Blizzard has not explained it. We will test it at launch.
