Beginner guide · World of Warcraft®: Forever

Set up your squad

From your game accounts to your first pull. Our example is a trio: a Paladin leading, a Priest and a Warlock following. Running two? Skip a window. Running five? Every step works the same way.

  • 9 quests, no scripting
  • Manual play only: one key press is one action on one character

Before you start

  • One game account per character, 2 to 8 of them (most people run 2–5). Each needs its own subscription or game time. World of Warcraft®: Forever is included in both.
  • A Windows 10 or 11 PC that can run all your clients at once. Each extra client needs more memory and graphics power. Low graphics settings help.
  • About 10 minutes per extra client for settings and keybinds the first time.
  • WoWBoxer Window Layouts, free: it places and sizes every WoW window and switches on hover to activate for you.
  • Optional: the Squad Companion and the WoWBoxer add-on for your macros and keys.

The one rule

Every action is your own key press, in that client. No tool may send one key press to several clients. That is input broadcasting, and Blizzard can close the accounts involved. Read what's allowed.

Quest 1 of 9Gather your accounts

5 min

Each character in your squad needs its own WoW game account. The easiest way is one Battle.net account with several WoW game accounts under it (up to 8; add them under Games & Subscriptions). They then show up in the account dropdown above the Play button. Separate Battle.net accounts also work; you just log in more often.

  1. Open the Battle.net app and pick World of Warcraft.
  2. Choose World of Warcraft: Forever and press Install. You only install it once.
  3. Open the account dropdown above Play and check that every game account is listed.
Screenshot: Battle.net's World of Warcraft page with the account dropdown open, showing three game accounts.

Unconfirmed

During the Forever beta, some players could not have two game accounts from the same Battle.net login online at once. Blizzard never explained it. If it happens at launch, use a separate Battle.net login for the extra accounts. We will update this step after launch day.

Quest 2 of 9Get out of fullscreen

2 min

Windows can only be moved and resized when the game runs in a normal window. All clients from one install share these settings, so you set them once.

  1. Start one client and log in.
  2. Open Game Menu (Esc) › Options › Graphics.
  3. Set Display Mode to Windowed. Not "Windowed (Fullscreen)".
  4. Set Render Scale to 100%, so small windows stay sharp.
  5. Set Max Background FPS to 30, so followers stay smooth while you play the leader.
  6. Lower the graphics quality as far as you like. All clients from one install share these settings, so pick values your PC can run several times at once.
  7. Keep the windows' title bars on. They make the windows easy to tell apart, and WoW draws its interface at the right size with them.
Screenshot: WoW's Graphics options with Display Mode set to Windowed.

Good to know

Forever starts in "Windowed (Fullscreen)". In that mode the game maximises itself again after every move, so no tool can place it. Switch to Windowed once and it stays.

Unconfirmed

Menu path and option names are from Classic Era. We will confirm them in the Forever launch client.

Quest 3 of 9Set the war table

5 min

Give every client a fixed place on screen. The main window is big; the followers sit beside it or float on top.

With WoWBoxer Window Layouts

  1. Download and install the app (WoWBoxer-Setup.exe, no admin rights needed), then open it. It opens stopped and leaves every window alone until you press Start placing windows.
  2. On Setup, choose how many clients you run (1–8).
  3. Pick a layout: Main + side is a good start. The main window gets the big slot, the followers stack beside it. Drag on the map to fine-tune; it saves automatically.
  4. Press Open N WoW clients to get one login screen per empty slot, or Open Battle.net instead and press Play for each account. You always log in yourself.
  5. Each window snaps into its slot as it opens, and its row goes from Awaiting… to Connected. Wrong order? Drag the rows, or use Identify. Later, Re-arrange (F5) puts every window back.

The app only moves and sizes windows. It never logs in for you and never sends keys or clicks to the game. How the app works.

By hand

  1. In Battle.net, pick the first game account in the dropdown and press Play. Pick the next account and press Play again, until every client is open.
  2. Use Windows Snap: drag a window to a screen edge, or press Win+← / →, then resize it.

It takes longer, but it is just Windows.

Screenshot: Three WoW windows on one screen: a large leader window on the left and two smaller follower windows stacked on the right.

Quest 4 of 9Fit the action bar

3 min

Small or narrow windows can cut off the ends of the action bar. This is plain geometry: at UI Scale 1 the bar only fits when the game picture is at least 4:3 (1.33 times as wide as it is tall).

Two fixes:

  • Make the window wider, so its game area is 4:3 or wider.
  • Lower the UI Scale. A rule of thumb: UI Scale ≤ 0.75 × width ÷ height. A follower of 830 × 664 needs about 0.93.

WoW keeps UI Scale in one shared settings file for all clients of an install. So pick the value your smallest window needs.

With the window app: it shows a dot per window (green = the whole bar fits). Auto-fit action bar (on by default) sets the one shared UI Scale your layout needs whenever all clients are closed, and keeps a backup.

By hand: in one client, Options › search "UI Scale" › tick Use UI Scale › set the value. Then close all clients and start them again, so every client reads the new value.

Screenshot: A follower window before and after the UI Scale fix: first the action bar is cut off at the bag slots, then it fits completely.

Quest 5 of 9Switch windows

2 min

You play every client yourself, so you need a quick way to move between them. WoWBoxer players use hover to activate: the window under the mouse becomes the active one. Point at a follower, press your key, and point back at your main window.

Hover to activate is a built-in Windows setting. It sends nothing to the game, so one key press is still one action on one character.

With the window app (easiest)

  1. Turn on Hover to activate: under Your squad on the Setup tab, or in Settings › Switching windows.
  2. Leave the Delay at about 30 ms. Then a window only becomes active when the mouse rests on it, not while it just passes over.
  3. Using overlays with Always on top? Leave Bring window to front when activated off, so the followers stay visible.

The app saves your own Windows values the first time and can put them back (in Settings, when the app quits if you like, and always when you uninstall it).

In Windows itself

  1. Open Control Panel › Ease of Access Center › Make the mouse easier to use.
  2. Tick Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse.
  3. Click OK, then rest the pointer on a follower window. After a short moment, it takes your key presses.

Some newer Windows 11 builds also show this switch under Settings › Accessibility › Mouse. If yours doesn't, use the Control Panel route above.

Window app tip

With overlapping layouts, set the follower windows to Always on top in the window app, so the leader's window never covers them. Leave the leader itself off "on top".

Screenshot: Windows' 'Make the mouse easier to use' page with 'Activate a window by hovering over it with the mouse' ticked.

Quest 6 of 9Form the party

3 min

Your followers need to know whom to follow and whose target to hit. WoW's own /follow and /assist do this, one key press at a time.

  1. On the leader, invite every follower: /invite Name. A party holds five. For more, convert it to a raid.
  2. Point at each follower window and accept the invite there.
  3. Keep the leader as party leader.
  4. On each follower, type /target party1. If that selects the leader, you are set. If not, try party2, party3 …, or target the leader and type /focus. Remember which unit is the leader on each follower.
  5. Make these two macros on each follower (Game Menu › Macros, or /macro). Change party1 to the unit from step 4.
Follow the leader27 / 255
#showtooltip
/follow party1
Assist the leader27 / 255
#showtooltip
/assist party1

Unconfirmed

These are standard WoW macro commands. We have tested them in Classic Era, not yet in the Forever launch client.

Quest 7 of 9Get your macro kit

5 min

Your followers' spells should hit the leader's target without you clicking it. The trick is a macro that tries your mouseover first, then the leader's target, then your own target. As in Quest 6, change party1 to the leader's unit on that follower:

Smite (follower)95 / 255
#showtooltip Smite
/cast [@mouseover,harm,nodead][@party1target,harm,nodead][harm,nodead] Smite
Lesser Heal on the leader97 / 255
#showtooltip Lesser Heal
/cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][@party1,help,nodead][@player] Lesser Heal

You don't have to write these yourself. Two ways to get a full kit for every character, for its class, role and level:

  • Squad Companion (in your browser): build your squad, open each character's Kit, and copy the macros into that client. Companion guide.
  • WoWBoxer add-on (in the game): type /wbx, answer the short setup questions (role, leader or follower, and whom it follows), then press Place all. The add-on writes its WBX macros and puts them on your bar, out of combat, after your click. Add-on guide.

After a few level-ups, refresh the kit to pick up new spells. The add-on offers this by itself on level-up.

Quest 8 of 9Same key, every client

5 min

Give every character the same job on the same key. Your hand learns one layout, and you never have to think about which window you are in.

Key Paladin (leader) Priest Warlock
1 Main attack Main attack (Smite) Main attack (Shadow Bolt)
2 Damage over time / seal Shadow Word: Pain Corruption
3 Heal yourself Heal the leader Drain Life
4 Utility Shield the leader Life Tap
R You pick the target Assist macro Assist macro
F You lead Follow macro Follow macro

Example for level 20. The Companion and the add-on suggest keys for your own classes and level.

  1. Drag each macro to the same action-bar slot on every client.
  2. Bind the keys once per client in Options › Keybindings.

R and F replace WoW's default keys for Reply and Assist Target. Pick other keys if you use those.

Screenshot: Three action bars side by side with the same key layout on each character.

Quest 9 of 9First pull

As long as you like

Play runs in a loop: act in the main window, point at a follower, one key, point at the next, one key, back to the main window.

  1. Leader: target a monster and press 1.
  2. Point at the Priest's window and press 1. The macro hits the leader's target.
  3. Point at the Warlock's window and press 1.
  4. Back to the leader. Repeat.

When the fight is over, press F on each follower to follow again.

Never

Never use software, hardware or keyboard macros that send one key press to several windows. That is input broadcasting.

Reward: Your first kill as a party of one player. Well played.
